Joe Carnahan?s thriller The Grey, currently receiving kudos for its blend of red-blooded action and considered existentialism, tells the fictional tale of a group of oilrig workers who survive a plane crash only to be hunted by wolves in the wild. Among the ragtag band of comrades facing off against nature under Liam Neeson?s steady leadership is Dermot Mulroney?s Talget, who, like the others, learns to shed his protective layers and confront his own fears when forced to face off directly with Mother Nature.
For Mulroney, The Grey represents a kind of muscular, male-driven pic that no longer gets made often enough. In a conversation ranging from the film?s throwback sense of masculinity to his reasons for joining Carnahan & Co. on the unusually brutal shoot (the cast and crew filmed in snowy, sub-zero conditions for months in Canada), Mulroney spoke candidly about how much the landscape has changed for him as an actor since he burst on the scene in the ?80s, why he was happy to be in a film with no women, and how his first time on the other side of the camera (directing last year?s Love, Wedding, Marriage, which he describes as ?a badly made movie?) turned him away from directing, at least for the time being.
Liam Neeson aside, you?re probably the most recognizable cast member in The Grey even though you?ve been hidden under layers of clothing and those glasses. How much consideration went into the conception of how your character looks? I can?t say that wasn?t deliberate but that wasn?t necessarily my idea. It was in conjunction discussing it with the director, Joe [Carnahan], who saw my character as someone who has kind of receded under his protective layers whether it?s the hat…
Having herself a bit of oral trouble, Kate Gosselin ventured out to pay a visit to the local dentist in West Reading, Pennsylvania on Thursday afternoon (January 26).
As she walked past on-hand paparazzi, the former TLC reality star was asked if the recent Italian cruise ship disaster would derail her summertime Royal Caribbean fan voyage, which she opted not to answer while simply saying that her tooth was killing her.
The dental doings come as Miss Gosselin continues to answer fan questions via her blog, on which she recently was asked about the “strict guidelines” she sets when it comes to her brood’s cell phone usage.
Giving the curious individual a complete rundown, the 36-year-old replied with the following list:
Here are my rules: 1. No Internet on their phone. 2. All parental controls turned on ie: no downloading apps etc. 3. ALL contacts put on their phones must first be approved by me. In other words, any friend, friend?s parent or even babysitter, they must ask before they add them to their phone. 4. NEVER answer a phone number or text that doesn?t come up identified. 5. Not allowed to delete ANY texts? At all period. 6. I know their pass code and am able to read anything on their phone at all times. They are not allowed to change the pass code without consulting me first. 7. Room has to be cleaned and homework done before using phone . 8. Must have phone in their back pack so that I can reach them when necessary.
It?s been a big help with communicating with them. They are comforted that they can reach me at any time to ask a question, or to say good night when they are at their dad?s. Overall, it?s been a very good experience and they have handled having a phone very maturely. Good luck!

Parts of Valérie Donzelli?s Declaration of War, which details a young couple?s struggle to keep their lives together in the face of their child?s illness, are bracingly intimate and believable. Yet there?s so much filmmaking packed around them that they flicker and fade before you know it: Between the Truffautish voice-overs and Jacques Demy-style musical interludes, it?s a wonder anyone in this sort-of drama, sort-of comedy ever gets any rest.
Declaration of War is the classic example of the small-scale movie with lofty intentions that simply tries too hard. That?s a shame, because the story?s emotional nuts and bolts are fairly sturdy, and the picture represents the kind of collaborative effort — a semi-autobiographical one, in fact — that generally suggests everyone involved is on the same page. The script was written by Donzelli and Jérémie Elkaïm, who have a child together in real life; they drew from their own experience of dealing with their son?s serious illness. They also star in the film, playing a couple named, adorably, Romeo and Juliette. Romeo and Juliette meet cute in a nightclub, spying one another across the noisy, sweaty terrain. Romeo sends a peanut flying across the room; Juliette, with lightning-quick reflexes and the luck of true love on her side, catches the tiny missile in her mouth. After a sunny montage in which the two run through the streets, cuddle, kiss and eat cotton candy together, they?re suddenly blessed with an infant who cries all the time and simply exhausts them.
That?s a normal problem, but the one Romeo and Juliette go on to face is far more daunting: When their son, Adam (played at this stage by César Desseix; in a later scene, he?s played by Elkaïm and Donzelli?s real-life son, Gabriel Elkaïm), is still a toddler, the…

There’s good news and bad news to begin this post-nomination, next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-last installment of Oscar Index. The good news? It’s kind of almost over! The bad news? Oy. Please don’t make me repeat it.
The laurel-sniffing wonks at Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics went 27 for 34 predicting its regular, top six categories, which means that the Academy basically tossed in a “surprise” every fifth nomination or so — though specialists at the MIASKF technically refuse to classify anything that was on last week’s charts as a “surprise.” So basically, if it’s not all two nominations for The Daldry, then you probably should have seen it coming.
Which you did. As such, we resume the Sisyphean torment of our Oscar-addled eternities, pushing boulders that look and feel suspiciously like crystal balls up hills that look and feel vaguely like the bones of 84 years’ worth of snubs. What does it all mean? To the Index!
The Final 9: 1. The Artist 2. The Descendants 3. The Help 4. Midnight in Paris 5. Hugo 6. Moneyball 7. War Horse 8. The Daldry 9. The Tree of Life
My favorite parts of nomination morning — apart from the Lucasfilm plant who yelped, “Red Tails! Gotta be Red Tails” as Al Roker informally polled Today Show tourists about their Best Picture predictions — were the peals of ecstasy that greeted The Daldry‘s announcement among the year’s nine Picture nominees. It sounded like a dog clamping down on a chew toy made of publicists. Other nominations elicited vaguely similar reactions, but that was The Reaction, as if to underscore just how desperately all the parties of all the films involved had chased this singular recognition, and how favorably…
